In the feature match of the BGSU Best Western Invitational between host Bowling Green and Rice, the Owls prevailed 3-1 to improve their record to 7-2. Game scores were 25-21, 20-25, 25-21, and 25-18. The Falcons are now 10-3.
"I really thought that our outside hitters had a fantastic match," commented Rice head coach Genny Volpe. "Jess Holderness and Karyn Morgan really stepped their game."
Morgan led Rice with 17 kills, while Holderness had 16 kills as did middle blocker Natalie Bogan. Setter Meredith Schamun had 55 assists.
"Meredith Schamun did a great job of distributing today," said Volpe. Also in double-figure kills was freshman Ashleigh McCord with 11.
The Rice Owls volleyball team improved to 6-2 on the season with a tight four-set victory over Hofstra (5-6) at the BGSU Best Western Invitational in Bowling Green, Ohio. Set scores were 25-21, 20-25, 25-23, and 25-12.
The Owls won set one 25-21 behind the strength of Natalie Bogan's 6 kills. BGUS hit .303 to Rice's .289, but the Owls totaled 17 kills, four more than the Falcons.
BG jumped out to a 7-3 early lead and held it throughout. Rice closed the gap to 16-19 on a Caroline Gill smash, but could not overcome the early deficit and lost 20-25.
Set three saw Rice gaining the early edge at 7-2, before BG narrowed the lead to just 9-8. The Owls then outscored the Falcons 11-4 to go ahead 20 to 12. BGSU went on a 6-0 run to close to within 20-18. A Karyn Morgan kill then gave Rice a 21-18 edge. Rice went up 23-20 following a kill by Jessica Holderness. Another Holderness kill put the Owls ahead 24-21 and a smash by Bogan put Rice ahead two sets to one.
Set four was just as tightly contested as the first three. It was 8-8 when Morgan had a kills and after a Meredith Schamun ace, the Owls were up 10-8 and never looked back in winning 25-18.
