
Foster's Big Night Not Enough for Owls

HOUSTON - Kelvin Lewis and Robert McKiver led a three-point shooting barrage then held on at the end to top Rice 71-62 in Hofheinz Pavilion Saturday.
Lewis scored 22 points and knocked down 4-of-6 three-pointers while McKiver finished with 18 points and was 6-for-10 from behind the arc as Houston drained 13, three-point field goals. Rice also had a season-best night from the perimeter, knocking down 9-of-27 from behind the arc.
Rodney Foster led the Owls with 22 points, making a career-high, 6-of-16 three-point attempts.
Houston improved to 20-6 and 9-3 in Conference USA play with the victory. Rice is now 3-23 and 0-13. The Owls conclude a three-game road stand next Saturday at UCF.
Rice trailed 36-26 at halftime but closed the gap to as few as four points.
The Owls' comeback attempt included a 13-3 run that started with a pair of Foster three-pointer and also included a triple from Aleks Perka.
The Cougars' only points during the run came from McKiver, a three-pointer that was his only basket in the second half.
After a three-pointer by Foster cut Houston's lead to 59-55 with 4:22 to play on a Foster three-pointer, the Cougars would score the next six points as Tafari Toney hit a jumper inside then came up with a steal on the Owls' next possession which led to a fastbreak layup by DaShaun Williams. After a missed three-point shot by Foster, Lewis scored inside and the Houston lead was 65-55 with 2:22 to play.
Houston began the game by making six of its first 10 three-point shots but the Cougars' lead was just 18:14 with 12:55 to play in the half. Rice also made a trio of three-pointers in the opening minutes as Bryan Beasley and Lawrence Ghoram along with Foster all hit from the perimeter.
The Owls' last lead came at the 5:58 mark when Patrick Britton scored inside to give Rice a 24-23 lead. Houston would finish the half with a 12-2 run that including a pair of treys by Lewis.
