
UAB Knocks Off Rice, 69-60

HOUSTON - Channing Toney knocked down a pair of three-pointers late in the second half to stretch a one-point lead out to seven as UAB defeated Rice 69-60 in Reliant Arena Wednesday.
Rice only led once in the game, 54-53, when Lawrence Ghoram connected on a 12-foot jumper with 6:38 to play. UAB would answer after Aaron Johnson was fouled by Chris Szalay. Johnson went to the line and made a pair of free throws at the 6:27 mark to put the Blazers out in front, 55-54.
Toney's first trey capped a lengthy possession for UAB as the Blazers came up with two offensive rebounds.
On the Blazers' next possession following Johnson's free throws, Frank Holmes and Lawrence Kinnard both came up with offensive rebounds before Toney knocked down a trey to stretch the lead to 58-54. A steal by Kinnard led to Toney's second three-point basket which ran the Blazer lead to 61-54 with 3:03 to play.
Johnson would later go back to the line for two more free throws to end a 10-0 Blazer run that made the score 63-54 with 1:56 to play.
Rice fell behind by as many as 12 points midway through the first half. The Owls chipped the advantage down to three at one point in the period but went to intermission trailing 69-60.
With the win, UAB won its fifth game in the Blazers' last six outings and improved to 17-7 and 7-2 in Conference USA play. Rice is now 3-20 and 0-10.
Toney finished with 12 points for UAB. Ed Berrios led the Blazers with 15 points and five assists. Rice was led by Patrick Britton who registered an 18-point, 10-rebound double-double while playing a career-high 39 minutes. Rodeny Foster added 12 points while Ghoram finished with 10.
UAB plays host to No. 1 Memphis Saturday. Rice plays host to UCF at Reliant Arena. Tip-off for the Owls' game against the Knights is slated for 2 p.m.
