Rice Pounds Marshall 3-0

Huntington, W.Va. - The Rice Owls volleyball team improved its record to 12-4 overall and 3-2 in Conference USA after pounding Marshall 3-0. Game scores were 25-15, 25-21, and 25-18.
The Thundering Herd is now 8-8 and 1-5 in league play.
Rice started the match strong, something that the coaching staff has emphasized of late. The Owls jumped out to a 13-6 that blossomed to 21-12 and eventually to 25-15. In set one, freshman Ashleigh McCord led all hitters with four kills as the Owls hit at a .320 clip. Owl libero Tracey Lam had 7 digs which limited Marshall to a -.029 attack percentage.
In set two, the Owls were down 5 to 1 before coming back to take 9-8 lead. It was 20-20 when Megan White's tough serves enable the Owls to win the next four points, two on kills by Karyn Morgan and one by setter Meredith Schamun. Natalie Bogan led Rice with 4 kills in the second set as Schamun posted 13 assists.
Rice again had a strong start at the beginning of set three forging a 11-7 lead after a Morgan ace. It was 21-15 prior to the final margin of 25-18. Morgan led Rice in set three with 4 kills and 3 service aces. Rice hit .296 to the Thundering Herd's .167.
On the night Morgan and McCord led all hitters with 9 kills apiece, with Morgan sporting a .333 attack percentage. Schamun had 27 assists and Lam had 12 digs to lead all defenders.
Rice had a hitting percentage of .284 with 38 kills and 13 errors in 88 attacks. Marshall hit at .084 (30-22-95).
Rice now plays at East Carolina on Sunday at 11 a.m. (Central).
