HOUSTON -- In the final home match of the season, Rice swept SMU 30-23, 30-22, 30-28 in Conference USA volleyball action on Saturday night at Fox Gym.
The Owls set up another balanced attack as sophomore Natalie Bogan (Oakland, Calif.) and junior Karyn Morgan (Episcopal HS) had 12 kills each and sophomore Jessie Boulavsky (Clear Brook HS) added 11. Boulavsky also led the team with a .476 hitting percentage and hit .400 for the weekend.
"Jessie played really well all weekend for us," said head coach Genny Volpe. "She's been consistent for us all season long."
Defensively, freshman Tracey Lam (San Francisco, Calif.) led the match with 25 digs to bring her two-day total to 60, and average of 7.50 digs per game. Senior Kristina Dennemann (Cicero, Ind.) was next with 13. With 69 team digs and 12 blocks, the Owls held the Mustangs to a .095 hitting percentage.
"Tracey has just been great this year and this was another solid performance tonight," said Volpe. "The key tonight was passing, and we did a great job keeping in our system."
For SMU, Caitlin Rainbird led the offense with 12 kills. Candice Davis anchored the defense with 21 digs.
Saturday's match marked the final home appearances for Dennemann and her classmates Yvette Kirk (Saratoga, Calif.) and Rachel Lopez (Prescott Valley, Ariz.).
Next up for the Owls is the 2007 Conference USA Volleyball Championship beginning on Thursday in Huntington, W.Va. Rice will find out its opponent and match time after Sunday's league schedule concludes.
