Morris Almond had a double-double with 18 points and 10 rebounds and Lorenzo Williams scored 17 to lead the Rice Owls to a 64 to 47 Conference USA victory over East Carolina in front of 4,902 fans at Williams Arena at Minges Coliseum in Greenville, N.C.
With the game tied at 10-10 the Owls went on a 10-0 run and were never threatned by the Pirates. ECU came back to within 8 at 22-14 but Almond drained two long-range bombs on consecutive trips to quell the Pirate uprising.
The Owls played solid defense, especially in the first-half as ECU only shot 16 percent from the field (5 of 31). For the game, ECU shot a paltry 27 percent (16-60) compared to the Owls at 43 percent (23-54).
Williams was back to his usual explosiveness following rehabilitation of a foot injury as he made 6 of 10 shots including 3 from beyond the arc and several swift drives to the bucket. Patrick Britton came off the bench to contribute to the Rice (8-7, 2-0) cause with 10 points and 7 rebounds.
The Pirates (5-10, 0-2) were led in scoring Courtney Captain's 18 points.
The Owls now host Houston on Wednesday at Autry Court at 7:05 pm.
