The Rice Owls volleyball team dropped a close five-game Conference USA match to the visiting Southern Miss Golden Eagles 30-23, 19-30, 27-30, 30-20, and 11-15. Rice drops to 10-11 overall and 3-4 in C-USA action, while Southern Miss climbs to 11-9 overall and 4-2 in league play.
Rice captured game one in fine fashion with 21 kills to Southern Miss's 13. In game two Southern Miss hit at .306 to Rice's .041 and in game three USM hit .222 to Rice's .204. Rice battled back in game four to hit .137, while the Golden Eagles hit at -.038. In the deciding game, Southern Miss hit at 400 (11-1-24) to Rice's .222 (10-4-27).
Rice sophomore Karyn Morgan led all attackers with 18 kills, while Jennifer McClean and Tessa Kuykendall each had 15. Jessie Boulavsky and Natalie Bogan had 14 kills apiece. Yvette Kirk had 31 digs to lead Rice, while Natalie Bogan had four total blocks.
The Golden Eagles were led by lefty Mari Ruddick's 13 kills, while Angela Hlavaty had 12 and Amanda Blunck posted 11. Maia Ivanova had 31 digs for USM, while Morgan Johnson had five total blocks.
The Owls are now on the road for their next four matches starting with a Oct. 13 date at UTEP. Rice's next home match is on Friday, Oct. 27 vs. SMU at 7 pm. The Owls last home match is on Sunday, Oct. 29 at 1 pm vs. Tulsa.
