Houston - Rice University athletics has announced today its first-ever television network production in conjunction with Time-Warner Cable. Rice will air its events on Time-Warner digital cable channel 595. Athletic programming on the Rice Sports Television Network includes seven men's home basketball games and the home women's basketball contest vs. Wake Forest (Dec. 22).
"The more television exposure Rice receives just makes it better for our program," states Rice basketball head coach Willis Wilson. "It gives Houstonians a significant amount of time to see our program, which in-turn helps recruiting, and gets people excited about Rice basketball."
John Granato, from KILT AM radio, will handle play-by-play duties, while KHWB-TV sports director Jorge Vargas will handle the analyst role.
"We have to thank our relationship with CSTV and Time-Warner Cable for helping us put together this great new package of television games," says Mike Pede´, Rice associate athletic director. "This is instrumental in heightening the perception of Rice basketball, one that has won 60 games in the past three years, and deserves this kind of publicity."
Other games aired as part of the Rice package on CSTV include - Utah (Dec. 3), East Carolina (Feb. 15) and Houston (Mar. 1). The Owls also had their game on Dec. 5 vs. Texas air on Fox Sports Net Houston, giving them a total of 11 games on the air in 2005-06, a record number for the school.
Rice women's basketball will appear on ESPN twice this season (Jan. 15 at Houston and Jan. 22 at SMU) as well as on CSTV when it hosts Tulsa on Feb. 19.
Several games on the Rice Sports Network Schedule will be picked up and aired nationally on CSTV, either live or tape delayed as well. Check www.cstv.com for broadcast schedule of those games. For questions involving Time-Warner Cable call, 713-341-1000.
