Milwaukee, Wis. - Despite a gallant rally, the Rice Owls lost a close contest to IUPUI 58-56 in the third-place game of Marquette's 44th Pepsi Blue & Gold Classic. The Owls were down 50-41 with 4:30 on the clock and outscored the Jaguars 15-8 to end the game but it wasn't enough.
Putting on the full-court press, Rice's Jamaal Moore stole the ball underneath the basket and jammed it to cut the lead to 53-49 at 2:25. Consecutive three-pointers by Morris Almond gave the Owls the lead at 55-53 with 1:11 remaining. IUPUI's David Barlow then buried a three-pointer from the right corner to give the Jags a 56-55 lead.
The Owls' Cory Pflieger connected on the first of a one-and-one free throw to tie it up, but IUPUI's George Hill made an individual move and scored on a six-footer in the paint with 2.3 seconds left. Rice went the length of the court and got a good three-point look from Pflieger that missed the mark.
For the game, the Jaguars shot 23 free throws and made 17 to Rice's 5-7 at the line. Rice made 21 field goals to IUPUI's 18.
Morris Almond was the only Owl in double-figures with a career-high 21 points on 8-17 shooting including 5-9 from three-point range. Almond also registered six rebounds and three blocks. J.R. Harrison contributed 9 points and 9 rebounds.
Hill led IUPUI (1-1) with 16 points and Angelo Smith registered a double-double with 14 points and 13 rebounds.
Rice, now 0-2, hosts New Mexico Highlands on Tuesday, Nov. 22 at Autry Court at 7:05 pm.
