Owls Defeat Hilltoppers

Houston -- Behind Lorenzo Williams' game-high 25 points, the Rice Owls pulled away from St. Edward's in the second-half to win 68-55 in an exhibition game at Autry Court.
Rice started strong to forge a 16-2 lead and didn't allow a Hilltopper field goal until the 14:20 mark in the first half, but St. Edward's outscored Rice 24-11 to end the half with a 29-27 lead. In the second half, junior Morris Almond scored the Owls' first six points to make it 33-33.
SEU had its final lead at 38-37 after two made free throws by Jeff Obersteller at 15:54. Rice then outscored the Hilltoppers 31 to 17 has Lorenzo Williams scored 19 of Rice's last 31points.
Says Rice head coach Willis Wilson, "Lorenzo (Williams) did a lot of good things and he stepped it up in the second half.
The Owls for the night shot 61 percent from the field, 77.3 percent in the second half (17-22), while limiting SEU to just a 30.2 percent field goal percentage. Also in double-figures for Rice was senior Jamaal Moore with 13 points on 6-6 from the field. Nine of 10 Rice players that participated scored at least two points on the night.
Rice officially opens the 2005-06 season on Friday, Nov. 18 at Marquette in the Golden Eagles' Blue & Gold Classic.
