Houston - Five players reached double-figures as the Rice Owls defeated number four-ranked (NAIA) Mobile 77-56. Senior Michael Harris tallied his 34th career-double-double with 21 points and 11 rebounds. Also scoring in double-digits were Jamaal Moore (14),Jason McKrieth (12), and Lorenzo Williams (with five assists) and Brock Gillespie each had 10. Rice is now 1-0, while Mobile goes to 6-2.

Rice is now 9-4 in season-opening games under head coach Willis Wilson.

The Owls, down 8-9, went on a 11-0 run early in the first half to forge a 19-9 lead. In that span, Harris scored six points to lead the rally. Rice then went on a 12-0 run early in the second half taking a 40-31 lead up to 52-31, which was the largest lead of the game until a Gillespie bucket made it 58-36 with 10:14 remaining.

The Owls, led by J.R. Harrison's game and career-high 13 boards, controlled the glass and out-rebounded Mobile 50-35. Mobile came into the contest averaging 88.7 points per game and with a 57.4 shooting percentage. But, the Rice defense, something that has been preached by Wilson in the pre-season practices, limited the Rams to only 20 field goals (61 attempts), a season-low 56 points, and a 32.8 shooting percentage.

The Rams were led by Gabe Feagin who scored a game-high 24 points on 8-14 shooting and 7-9 from the charity stripe.

Rice now entertains Middle Tennessee on Tuesday in Autry Court at 7:05 pm.
