Track and Field: Owls Compete at Cannon Classic

Allison Beckford was the first collegiate athlete to cross the finish line in the 400 meters, finishing second overall in a NCAA provisional qualifying time of 54.45. Aimee Teteris won the 800 meters, recording a provisional time of 2:07.99, and Tanya Wright came in 12th, posting a personal season-best time of 2:11.17. Shaquandra Roberson came in 12th in the mile run with the Owls' best time of the season, 4:49.55, just off the provisional cut of 4:49.40. Rice's 4x400-meter relay team of Kelly Anderson, Teteris, Margaret Fox and Beckford, won the event in 3:39.02, and the distance medley squad of Teteris, Anderson, Wright and Roberson came in second in a time of 11:29.25. Both times were provisional qualifiers. In the field events, Alice Falaiye won the long jump with a mark of 20-3 3/4, and Jessica Sommerfeld took first place in the shot put with a throw of 48-9 1/2.
For the men, Scott Byer came in eighth in the 400 meters in a time of 48.08, and Keith Piercecame in 10th in the mile in a season-best time for the Owls, 4:10.28. Lachlan McArthur finished fifth in the 3,000 meters, recording the top time of the year for Rice in that event, 8:12.86.
Next up for Rice is the WAC indoor championships Feb. 24-26 at the Yeoman Fieldhouse.
