Rice Hall of Famer
Former Rice football standout Rodrigo Barnes, a trailblazer as one of Rice's first African-American student-athletes and a standout on the field at both the collegiate and professional level, will return to Rice Stadium on Saturday, November 13 to sign copies of his book The Bouncing Football, Life Lessons on the Gridiron.
Barnes will be signing copies of his book at the R Association tailgate prior to the 1 p.m. kickoff between Rice and WKU and on the west side concourse 30 minutes prior to kickoff through the end of the first half. Copies of Barnes' book can be purchased on Saturday at the stadium for $25.
Published by Fulton Books earlier this year, "The Bouncing Football" is a motivational account that tells readers that talents and skills are important, but as is placing oneself in the right path while trusting the hands of a loving and understanding God.
'The Bouncing Football' is an Emotional Biography of a Professional Player Who Lost His Career for Speaking Out About the Truth in the Industry
Barnes enrolled at Rice in the fall of 1968 along with football players Mike Tyler and Stahle' Vincent and basketball player Leroy Marion, becoming the "First Four" Black student-athletes for the Owls. In his first varsity season in 1969, Barnes was named the SWC's Sophomore Defensive Player of the Year. Two years later, he earned conference's defensive player of the year from UPI. Off the field, he helped found the Black Student Union and was a member of The Players—Houston's oldest student-run theater company.
He was drafted by Dallas in 1973 and played for four seasons in the league, earning a Super Bowl ring with the Oakland Raiders in Super Bowl XI.
After his NFL career, Barnes was a general manager and coach in the United Football League from 1979-81. He earned a master's degree in education from Prairie View A&M University, with certifications in guidance and counseling and midmanagement. Barnes is currently an assistant principal at the Garland Alternative Education Center.
Waco native Rodrigo Barnes is a Super Bowl champion who continues to make a big impact.
