Rice came out strong in the second half, but it was too late as Wake Forest opened the game with 28 straight points to defeat the Owls, 56-24.
After the teams exchanged punts on the game's opening possessions, Wake Forest scored on four straight opportunities to build a 28-0 lead less than two minutes into the second quarter. Rice finally got on the board with a 39-yard Jack Fox
field goal, but Wake struck back with two more touchdowns, capped off by Essang Bassey's 51-yard fumble return to send Rice to the locker room trailing 42-3. The Owls came out strong in the second half, scoring three times, but the Demon Deacons scored twice to run the finally tally to 56-24.
Points Off Turnovers
Wake Forest converted three Rice turnovers into 21 points, including a pair of returns for scores.
recorded 266 all-purpose yards, the fifth-most in a game in Rice history. It was his fourth straight game with at least 150 all-purpose yards and his third straight over 200. He now has 3,560 all-purpose yards to move into fifth place on the Rice career list.
Rice returns home for the first time in more than a month when it hosts UTSA next Saturday, Oct. 6 at 6 p.m.
