Three Owls Named to C-USA All-Academic Team

IRVING, Texas - The Rice Owls landed a league-leading three student-athletes on the 2018 InTouch Credit Union Conference USA Men's Track & Field All-Academic Team, the league office announced on Wednesday (5/23) afternoon.

Charlie Card-Childers (redshirt junior), Scott Filip (redshirt senior) and Erik Maher (redshirt senior) were recognized for both their classroom and athletic achievements. The C-USA All-Academic Team is comprised of 11 male track and field athletes with a minimum grade point average of 3.2 and at least a sophomore class standing.

Card-Childers, from Houston, was named to the C-USA All-Academic Team for a second straight season, earning a 3.77 GPA while majoring in Cognitive Sciences. He recently earned C-USA All-Conference honors by placing third in the decathlon at the C-USA Championships and will be competing in the javelin at the NCAA West Prelims in Sacramento on May 26 (2 p.m. CT).

Filip, a native of Bloomingdale, Ill., earned his third C-USA All-Academic team nod with a 3.72 GPA (Master of Arts in Global Affairs). Filip has already secured a spot at the NCAA National Championships in the decathlon after winning his seventh career C-USA title with a victory in the decathlon at the C-USA Outdoor Championships. In addition, Filip earned USTFCCCA Second Team Indoor All-American honors (heptathlon) and became the first athlete in C-USA history to win four heptathlon tiles.

Maher, from Roseland, N.J., won his first career C-USA Outdoor javelin title while posting a 3.83 GPA (Master of Arts in Education). The senior thrower has twice been named to the USTFCCCA All-Academic Team and is earning his first C-USA All-Academic Team honor. During the outdoor season, Maher also won the javelin at the J. Fred Duckett Twilight. He'll be competing at the NCAA West Prelims on May 26 (2 p.m. CT).
