HOUSTON -- Rice pounded out a season-high 17 hits Wednesday night en route to a 14-5 victory over Columbia at Reckling Park.
The 14 runs were also a season-high.
Columbia jumped out early, scoring three runs in the first inning on three hits. The Owls got one back in the bottom of the inning. Ryan Chandler led off with a double to left center and two batters later, came around on Braden Comeaux's single.
Rice took the lead for good in the second inning. With one out, Bradley Gneitling and Cody Staab hit back-to-back singles. Two batters later, Chandler loaded the bases with a walk. Trei Cruz then cleared the bases, doubling to left field and giving the Owls a 5-3 lead.
The Lions pulled to within one in the top of the third on two straight singles followed by a double to left. But Dominic Cox relayed to Cruz, who fired a strike to Justin Collins just ahead of the tying run.
The Owls answered with three runs in the bottom of the inning. With one out, Rice loaded the bases when Collins was hit by a pitch, Gneitling singled and Staab walked. Cox and Chandler then hit back-to-back RBI singles and Cruz hit a sacrifice fly to left to bring in Staab and take an 8-4 lead.
Rice added two runs in the fourth, one in the sixth and three in the eighth. The Owls finished with 17 hits on the night.
Braden Comeaux was 3-for-6 with three RBI while Trei Cruz added a season-high five RBI. Willy Amador picked up the win, going three innings in relief of Jackson Parthasarthy, striking out three.
Rice improves to 9-10 on the season. Columbia falls to 3-11.
Rice opens Conference USA play this Friday, Mar. 16, when it travels to Ruston, La., to face Louisiana Tech. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m.
