Lafayette, La. — Senior Mitchell Meissner fired a three-under 69 to finish four-under par and tied for sixth-place at the Louisiana Classics, played at the par-72, 6,866-yard Oakbourne Country Club.
The San Antonio native now has two top ten finishes this year and five for his career. Meissner's 54-hole score of 212 was a season-best. The 69 was his eighth round of par or better this year and the 29th of his career. It was also his third round in the 60's and the eighth of his career.
Rice carded its second straight round of par or better with an even par 288. The Owls finished 10-over par for the tournament, tied for 11th-place with host Louisiana-Lafayette.
"We did what we needed to do today and that was play a solid round," said head coach Justin Emil. "We did a much better job on the dance floor today. Mitchell (Meissner) really turned it on in round two and carried that momentum into the final round."
Senior Mario Carmona finished two-under par and tied for 19th-place after firing his second straight 72. The Houston native now has 13 rounds of par or better this year and 42 in his career. He also has five top 20 finishes this year and 17 in his career.
Freshman Jake Benson had the best finish of his young career, tying for 46th-place at four-over par. Benson carded his second straight 72, his third round of par or better this year. His 54-hole score of 220 was also a season-best. Freshman Rishi Kejriwal, playing as an individual, tied for 59th-place at six-over par after carding a final round 76. Junior Grant Rogers finished 12-over par in a 74th-place tie after posting a 75 and junior Mason Weld carded a 75 to finish 16-over par in 80th-place.
No. 3 Texas A&M won the team tournament at 29-under par, eight strokes in front of No. 11 Illinois. Texas A&M's Dan Erickson earned medalist honors at 10-under, one stroke in front of McNeese State's Blake Elliott.
Rice returns to the links next week, Mar. 4-6, when it travels to Cabo, Mexico for the Querencia Cabo Intercollegiate.
