Golf Finishes in 10th at Steelwood Collegiate Invitational

Benson leads Owls in 31st-place

Loxley, Ala. — Rice closed its fall slate with a 10th-place finish at the Steelwood Collegiate Invitational, played at the par-72, 7,096-yard Steelwood Country Club.
 
The Owls closed with a final round 307 to finish 34-over par.
 
Sophomore Jake Benson led the Owls in a tie for 31st-place at six-over par after finishing with a 79.
Junior Nicholas Duggan shot a 73 to finish seven-over par in a 38th-place tie. Senior Grant Rogers carded a 76 to finish nine-over par and tied for 43rd-place.
 
Senior Mason Weld finished in 54th-place at 14-over par after closing with a 79. Freshman Jack Diamond, playing in his first collegiate tournament, posted a 75 to finish 15-over par to tie for 55th-place and sophomore Rishi Kejriwal finished in 68th-place at 33-over par after carding an 89.
 
"We just couldn't put it together today," said Rice head coach Justin Emil. "The offseason is next for us. We're looking forward to hitting the books in the classroom and finding ways to get better on the golf course."
 
No. 7 Wake Forest won the tournament at 20-under par, 16 strokes in front of Mississippi State. Wake Forest's Eric Bae leads the individual tournament at nine-under par, two strokes in front of Indiana's Brock Ochsenreiter.
 
Rice will take a break until February when it begins the spring season co-hosting the All-American Intercollegiate, Feb. 17-19.
