The Rice men's tennis team evened their 2018 dual record with a 5-2 win over the Lamar Cardinals on Sunday at the George R. Brown Tennis Center on Sunday.
The matchup was a meeting of a pair of two-time defending conference champions who were sporting youthful lineups and the Owls were able to use their early momentum from taking the doubles point to race to register three wins in singles to clinch the match.
"I felt like it was a good week of practice and I think everybody played a little bit better than they did last week," Rice head coach Efe Ustundag said. "We really didn't play too many loose games. Guys that got the lead, got off the court quickly."
After a 6-2 win by Conrad Russell and Jacob Eskeland on court two, Eric Rutledge and Sumit Sarkar used a late service break to clinch the doubles point with a 6-4 decision on court one. Russell and Eskeland joined fellow freshman Mohamed Abdel-Aziz to provide the clinching points with straight set wins in singles. Rutledge close out the match by outlasting Lamar's Benny Schweizer (LU) 6-7 (2-7), 7-6 (12-10), 10-7 to close out the scoring.
The Owls will close out a five-match homestand to open the season when they host LSU next Sunday at noon at the GRBTC.
