HOUSTON - Rice sophomore middle blocker Grace Morgan established a career-high with 18 kills to help lead the Owls volleyball team to a five-set victory (25-15, 19-25, 25-22, 19-25, 15-6) over the Incarnate Word Cardinals Saturday afternoon at the Rice Adidas Invitational I.

The Owls (6-4) bounced back from a tough loss to California on Friday by finishing strong in the fifth set against Incarnate Word (1-4). Rice never trailed in the set and the Owls put the Cardinals in an unrecoverable 9-2 hole. Freshman outside hitter Nicole Lennon recorded four kills in the frame while Morgan added an additional three kills. The Rice defense limited Incarnate Word to a -.160 hitting percentage in the set.

"That was a tough match for us," Rice head coach Genny Volpe said. "What Incarnate Word really did well was their blocking. They had 11 blocks in the match and I think they kind of got in our heads a bit and caused us some hesitation. Kudos to them, they played hard and had a ton of energy. Today we learned that the fundamentals are critical for us. I was not in the huddle going into that fifth set. They talked it out among themselves and I'm not sure what they said to each other but they certainly came out ready to win. We need to bottle that up and do it a little more consistently."

"Grace Morgan had a phenomenal match for us. We've been having her do some different things for us and playing a couple of different spots because she's so versatile. Wherever we put her she's showing she can excel.

Morgan and freshman outside hitter Seyvion Waggoner were each named to the All-Tournament Team. Waggoner recorded 10 kills, two blocks and six digs in her first career start. Lennon (13 kills/11 digs) and senior setter Madison McDaniel (52 assists/11 digs) each recorded double-doubles in the victory. Sophomore libero Lee Ann Cunningham posted a season-high 26 digs in the win.

The Owls will return to Tudor Fieldhouse on Tuesday when they host crosstown foe Houston Baptist at 6 p.m. before hosting the Rice Adidas Invitational II Sept. 15-16.
