Zhang Picks up Pair of Wins at ITA All-American Prequals

Wendy Zhang picked up a pair of wins in the pre-qualifying round to highlight action for the Rice Women's Tennis team on the first day of action at the 2017 Riviera/ITA All-American Championships at the Riviera Tennis Club in Pacific Palisades, California.

Zhang opened singles play by downing fifth seeded Sophie Whittle of Gonzaga. 6-2, 6-2 and then dispatched of Elise Van Heuvlen of Iowa, 6-1, 6-2. She will face Sarah Dvorak of Texas Tech on Sunday for a berth in the qualifying round.

Michaela Haet and Lindsey Hodge dropped their opening match in the pre-qualifying doubles round, 8-4 to Celia Ruiz and Lisa Hofbauer of East Carolina.

Haet and Hodge will compete in the consolation round of pre-qualifying doubles on Sunday and will open play in the main singles draw on Tuesday.
