Sept. 18, 2017
IRVING, Texas – Rice senior Samantha Chaiken has been named the Conference USA Soccer Offensive Player of the Week, the league office announced from its headquarters in Irving, Texas, on Monday (Sept. 18).
In Rice's only game last week, Chaiken scored two goals and had an assist in the 6-2 C-USA victory over league foe FAU (Sept. 15). Not only did Chaiken control the tempo and possession in the midfield, she led all players in the match with seven shots - including five that were on goal to tie for the team's 2017 season-high. Her five points in the match is the second-most by a Rice Owl this season. Chaiken maintained a .714 shots-on-goal percentage while playing all 90 minutes of the match.
In seven games this year Chaiken leads Rice Soccer in shots (24), shots-on-goal (8) and shots-on-goal (10). In her career she has started all 58 Rice games in which she has played. This is the first time in her career for Chaiken to be named the league's Offensive Player of the Week.
The Rice Soccer team next hosts C-USA league foe Louisiana Tech on Thursday (Sept. 21). Start time at the Owls' Holloway Field is set for 7 pm.
