HOUSTON - Rice junior Austin Riddle broke his own school record in the hammer throw at Thursday's UH Cougar Spring Break Invitational and in the process grabbed the top ranking in the nation in the early outdoor season.
Riddle, from Houston (Memorial HS), unleashed a throw of 66.25m (217-04) to best his previous best mark of 64.15m (210-5.0) at last year's NCAA West Prelims. In the same event, Uche Ugwunze placed second overall with a throw of 61.03m (200-03), which ranks fifth-best in the nation. Michael Yow placed third (57.39m) in the hammer while junior teammate Matt Garcia was fourth (56.52m).
Other victories on Thursday included Erik Maher in the javelin (61.03m), Filip Drozdowski in the 110m hurdles (14.48) and Matthew Murray in the 800m (1:53.82).
"This was a great opening meet for us," Rice men's T&F head coach Jon Warren said. "We focused on a few areas and are thrilled with the results. The highlight had to be the hammer throw and finishing 1-2-3-4. The throws also did very well in the javelin, finishing 1-2. The mid-distance crew shined in the 800 with very windy conditions. Overall this was a good start to the season."
