HOUSTON - The Rice Owls women's basketball squad dropped their second straight home contest with a 69-51 setback Sunday afternoon at Tudor Fieldhouse to the Charlotte 49ers.

Rice (9-4, 0-2) was led in scoring by senior forward Jasmine Goodwine (14 points) for a second straight game but Charlotte (10-3, 2-0) used a 25-8 advantage in the second quarter to seize control of the game and never relinquished the lead.

The Owls outscored the 49ers in points in the paint (32-22) and points off turnovers (12-7) but Charlotte connected on 10 -of-24 from beyond the arc, led by 22 points from guard Ciara Gregory (6-of-12 from deep).

Rice executed very well on both ends of the floor in the opening quarter, outscoring the 49ers 20-13 behind 53 percent shooting from the field. Rice made 3-of-6 attempts from three-point territory, two of which makes came from junior guard Wendy Knight.

However, in the second quarter Charlotte flipped the script by outscoring Rice 25-8 and limiting the Owls to just 25 percent shooting in the period. Gregory meanwhile scored 11 points in the second quarter alone by making 3-of-4 from long distance, including a back-breaker trifecta at the halftime horn.

Goodwine would help Rice inch a bit closer in the third with six points but Charlotte still managed to outscore Rice 18-12 in the period to take a 56-40 advantage to the fourth. The Owls forced Charlotte into six fourth quarter turnovers but Rice couldn't gain any traction on the offensive end en route to the 69-51 loss.

The Owls will look to regroup on the road when they travel to Middle Tennessee on Thursday, Jan. 5 before traveling to Birmingham, Ala. on Jan. 7 to take on the UAB Blazers. Rice's next home contest will be Jan. 19 versus Louisiana Tech at 7 p.m.
