The Rice women's tennis team will face a varied lineup of foes when they open their 2016 Fall tournament season by hosting the Rice Invitational Friday through Sunday at the George R. Brown Tennis Center.
The three-day tournament features entries from Alabama, Auburn, Denver, Houston, McNeese State, Northwestern State, Sam Houston State, SMU, Southern Miss, Texas, Texas A&M Corpus Christi, Texas State, Tulane, UTA and UTSA in addition to the full contingent from the Owls. First round action gets underway at 8:30 with the opener round of doubles, followed immediately by the first round of singles action.
After weeks of practice, Rice head coach Elizabeth Schmidt said she was looking forward to seeing her team take the court for the first time.
"We've been working hard since the start of the semester and I know everyone is excited to get back on the competition court," Schmidt said. "This year's field has a really nice mix of teams. We've got some C-USA schools as well as number of schools we see each year and we've got a few schools, such as Denver, Alabama and Auburn, that we don't play very often. I'm really looking forward to seeing how we stack up with the other schools who will be in our regional later this fall."
