The Rice men's tennis team opened its 2016 Fall schedule by grabbing individual titles in a pair of tournaments over the weekend.
Rice sophomores Jake Hansen and Eric Rutledge swept through four opponents to capture the men's doubles crown at the Racquet Club Collegiate Invitational in Midland, Texas while junior Jamie Malik captured the singles title at the Islander Open in Corpus Christi.
Hansen and Rutledge downed the tournament's second seed, Alex Gasson and Wyatt Lovera of Denver in the second round, 8-6 and then downed Texas' Rodrigo Banzer and Leonardo Telles in the title match, 8-5.
Malik won in straight sets over the Islanders' Kevin Bettendroffer 6-1, 6-4 to cap off an unbeaten weekend of action.
The Owls will be back in action in two weeks when the host their annual Rice Invitational at the George R. Brown Tennis Center September 30-October 2.
