By Chuck Pool (cpool@Rice.edu) - The Rice men's tennis team will kick off its fall campaign sporting a doubles team ranked in the top ten in the country.
Seniors Tommy Bennett and junior David Warren were ranked eighth in the Oracle/ITA preseason rankings which were released on Tuesday. Bennett earned a ranking in singles, opening the year at 108th.
Bennett and Warren completed a strong finish to their junior season, finishing 27th in the nation, the highest ranking for a Rice doubles team since 2006 when Robert Searle and Tony Hearle finished the season ranked 19th.
They defeated four ranked doubles teams down the stretch, including three in the top 25, capping that stretch with a 6-3 defeat of LSU's sixth-ranked Jordan Daigle/Boris Arias in the opening round of the NCAA team championship.
They became the first Rice doubles team to reach the NCAA Doubles tournament since 2008 where the dropped a three-set battle with Tennessee's Luis Valero and Jack Schipanski, who ended the year ranked 22nd.
They will join with Jake Hansen and Eric Rutledge to open their fall seasons at the Midland Invitational in Midland, Texas, while Jamie Malik, Henrik Munch, Oscar Janglin and Gerardo Penchyna will kick off fall tournament action at the Islander Open in Corpus Christi.
