Golf in 11th-Place at Conference USA Championship

Texarkana, Ark. -- Rice began play at the Conference USA Championship with an opening round 303 to sit 15-over par in 11th-place. The tournament will be played at the par-72, 6,969-yard Texarkana Country Club.

"We really struggled today," said Rice head coach Justin Emil. "But I feel good about the next two rounds coming up. There's a lot of golf left to play in this championship."

Freshman Will Voetsch opened with a one-over 73 to sit in a 16th-place tie. Senior James Lee and sophomore Mitchell Meissner are tied for 35th-place after each carding a 76.

Sophomore Mario Carmona is tied for 47th-place after posting a six-over 78 while junior Kevin Reilly is eight-over par and tied for 56th-place after carding an 80.

UAB leads the team competition at three-under par, one stroke ahead of second-place Louisiana Tech. UAB's Taylor Eyster leads the individual competition at eight-under par, five strokes in front of Marshall's Clark Robinson and Old Dominion's Nick Rencis.

The second round begins tomorrow at 8 a.m. The Owls begin at 8:50 a.m. off of hole 10 and will be paired with Florida Atlantic and Southern Miss.
