Tommy Bennett and Katherine Ip, two juniors who have played major roles in the Rice men's and women's tennis nationally ranked efforts on the courts, have been honored for the efforts in the classroom as members of the 2016 Conference USA Tennis All-Academic team, which was announced on Tuesday.
Bennett, from Lewes, England, has posted a 3.75 GPA as an Economics major and has led the Owls into the national top 30 heading into the Conference USA Championship this weekend at Rice's George R. Brown Tennis Center. Bennett and fellow junior David Warren are currently ranked 30th in doubles and Bennett was honored by the conference in February as its men's tennis athlete of the week after anchoring a win over LSU.
Ip, from Hong Kong, carries a cumulative 3.97 GPA in Kinesiology for the 45th ranked Rice women's team who will begin their quest for a fourth consecutive C-USA championship this weekend in Murfreesboro, Tennessee. Ip has been consistently ranked nationally in singles and will enter the weekend ranked 92nd in singles in addition to a No. 48 ranking in doubles with freshman Emily Smith.
The 14 members of the 2016 C-USA Tennis All-Academic Team were selected in a vote of the league's sports information directors. Honorees must hold a minimum 3.2 GPA and have competed in at least 75 percent of their team's scheduled matches.
