MacFarlane Wins High Jump B Section at Texas Relays

- After a long weather delay, the Rice Owls track and field programs closed out day two of the Texas Relays highlighted by solid performances in the field events Friday at Mike A. Myers Stadium.

On the women's side senior Belle MacFarlane won the B section of the high jump, clearing 1.71m (5'7.25") to match her opening mark set at last week's Victor Lopez Classic. MacFarlane, from Dallas, was the only competitor in the 20-woman field to clear 1.71m, doing so on her first attempt.

In addition junior thrower Ijeoma Ugwunze finished fifth in the B section of the shot put with a throw of 13.39m, which came on her sixth and final attempt.

The Rice women also had a handful of athletes compete at the Bobcat Invitational hosted by Texas State on Friday, with the highlight being a second place finish (1:01.73) by freshman Akuira Young in the 400m hurdles. Junior sprinter Eboni Sutherland also placed second collegiately in the 100m dash with a lifetime best mark of 11.72.

Rice senior Evan Karakolis was the lone men's competitor on Friday and placed sixth in the javelin in his season debut. The All-American saved his best throw for last, recording a heave of 69.31m (227-4). The Owls were also represented in the hammer throw on Thursday when sophomore Austin Riddle finished eighth (60.88m) in the hammer throw.

The Owls will close out the Texas Relays on Saturday with senior All-American thrower Claire Uke scheduled to compete in both the discus (12 p.m.) shot put (4 p.m.). Ugwunze will also throw the discus (10 a.m.) and the men's 4x800 relay team is set to run at 10:40 a.m.
