Rice Volleyball Signs Three

Nov. 9, 2016

HOUSTON – Rice volleyball announced the signing of three student-athletes on Wednesday to enroll in school and join the team in 2017. Seyvion Waggoner from Bountiful, Utah, Nicole Lennon from Katy and Lauren Lee from Coppell, Texas, signed National Letters of Intent with the Owls.

"I think the best word to describe this 2017 incoming class would be competitive," Rice head coach Genny Volpe said. "All of them possess a strong competitive desire and can compete at a very high level. Simply put, they're winners."

Waggoner is a 5-11 outside hitter who currently attends and plays for Bountiful High School under head coach Sarah Chism. While with the Braves, Waggoner has been a part of two state championship teams and has earned first-team and second-team all-state honors. A four year starter, Waggoner was an AVCA Phenom Athlete with one of the highest VPI scores in the nation and a member of the USA High-Performance A1 Team. Waggoner also played club for Club V16 Black. In addition to volleyball, Waggoner made the varsity team in basketball as a freshman.

"Seyvion is one of the best athletes in the entire country," said Volpe. "She is powerful, explosive, and her jumping ability allows her to attack high and terminate. But one of the best things about her is that she has a strong desire to learn and improve her game."

Lennon is a 6-2 outside/right side hitter from Katy, Texas. She plays for Cinco Ranch High School under head coach Danielle Wells. She's earned first-team and second-team all-district honors for the Cougars and is a three-time all-academic district selection. Lennon hit .290 for her career and .310 as a senior, totaling 817 kills (3.2 kps) in three years as a varsity member. She's a member of the National Honor Society, National Science Honor Society and the National Spanish Honor Society.

"Nicole is extremely athletic and her attacking and blocking skills are already at a very high level," Volpe said. "She can dominate the net and has a strong all-around game. Another great quality is her work ethic. She puts in extra time for her craft and it will allow her continuous improvement at the collegiate level."

Lee is a 5-1 libero from Coppell, Texas who plays for the Cowboys under Julie Green at Coppell High School. For her career, Lee has accumulated 1,816 digs, 99 aces and 283 assists. During her senior campaign Lee has amassed 665 digs (5.6 dps), 41 aces and 99 assists. Lee was Second Team All-District 7-6A and the district Defensive Player of the Year. Lee also played club for TAV 15 Blue with whom she earned MVP and Defensive Player of the Year honors.

"Lauren is a baller, she makes plays happen on her side of the net that every team needs," said Volpe. "She's got reading abilities as well as fundamentals. She makes the routine plays consistently but will also make an incredible play due to her quick reactions. She's also a very strong leader."
