HOUSTON—The Rice duo of Cali Roper and Elsa Racasan finished first and second to lead the Owls women's cross country team to a first-place finish at the 40th annual Rice Invitational.
Roper won the race for the second consecutive year, finishing in a time of 15:56, two seconds faster than teammate Racasan (15:58). Junior Hannah Kay earned a top ten finish taking ninth-place in a time of 17:00.
Kristin Sweeney (20th – 17:33), Fabiola Andujar-Perez (22nd – 17:34) and Ellen Diemert (25th – 17:39) finished in the top 30.
Lucrecia Aguilar, Abby Halm, Savannah Rohloff, Julia Sunderland, Audrey Wassef, Anna Figuerora and Rachel Peterson also finished for the Owls.
The women's team, ranked sixth in the USTFCCA South Central poll, finished ahead of eighth-ranked Lamar.
The men, ranked ninth in the latest USTFCCCA South Central Region Preseason poll, finished in seventh-place. Marco Ruiz was the Owls' top finisher in 15th-place with a time of 19:11. Bradley Dohner finished in 19:24 in 23rd-place and Will Firth (19:36) took home 30th.
James McCreary, Steve Booker, Griffin Lee and Robert Baines also finished for the Owls.
The women next compete at the Texas A&M Invitational on Sept. 26, while the men will race at the Rim Rock Classic in Lawrence, Kan., on Oct. 3.
