McGuffie Named to USA Bobsled National Team

Former Rice running back and wide receiver Sam McGuffie is one of 15 men who have been named to the 2015-2016 USA Bobsled National Team roster today.

Athletes competed in a series of races at Mount Van Hoevenberg in Lake Placid, N.Y. in the final step of the selection process to vie for a chance to earn a spot in one of three sleds per discipline this season.

McGuffie is one of six former college and professional athletes who earned a spot as rookies on the team. He joins former University of Virginia running back Hakeem Adbul-Saboor, University of Maine track and field athlete Frank Del Duca, former Oklahoma State wide receiver Nathan Gilsleider, Belmont University's former track and field competitor Austin Landis and Brown University alumni decathlete Evan Weinstock.

After transferring to Rice after one year at the University of Michigan, McGuffie was a standout in both football and track at Rice. He had a combined 2,299 all-purpose yards at Rice, rushing for 1,057 yards with seven touchdowns and catching 102 passes for 1,059 and nine touchdowns. He ranks 11th in school history with his 102 receptions.

On the track, he finished second in the long jump at the 2009 Conference USA Outdoor with a jump of 24-8.25 and he finished third in the Heptathlon at the 2012 C-USA Indoor.

World Cup bobsled and skeleton racing kicks off in Altenberg, Germany November 30- December 6, 2015 before returning to the U.S. in 2016 with races in Lake Placid, N.Y. from January 5-9 and Park City, Utah from January 11-16. The national team will be split between the first three World Cup races in Europe and the North American Cup races in Calgary and Whistler, Canada before the full team comes together in January for the Lake Placid event.
