Savannah Durkin, Solomiya Zinko and Stephanie Nguyen each won a pair of singles matches to advance to the semifinals in their respective draws of the Rice Fall Invitational at Jake Hess Tennis Stadium on Saturday.
Durkin dropped Marta Sramkova of Louisiana Tech, 6-2, 6-1 and Augustina Serio of Texas Arlington, 7-6 (4), 6-2 to reach the semifinals in the Blue Flight. She will face Alexandra Starkova of Louisiana Tech in one half of the semifinals on Saturday.
Zinko and Nguyen moved onto the semifinals in the Gray Flight.
Zinko race past Andreea Nenu of McNeese State, 6-0, 6-0 and then ground out a 4-6, 6-3, 10-6 over Jessica Birowski of Texas-Arlington. She will face Houston's Charlotte Phillips for the second consecutive week in a singles semifinal. The two faced off last week in the semis of the second flight singles of the Cougars' Solinco Houston Open, with Phillips taking a 7-5. 5-7, 10-8 decision.
Nguyen, who captured the third flight singles title last weekend at the same event, moved on to the Gray flight's other semifinal with wins over UTA's Verena Scott (6-4, 7-6 (5)) and Taly Merker of Louisiana Tech (6-2, 6-2). She will face Houston's Angela Lorenzo on Saturday.
In other action, Alison Ho opened with a win over La Tech's Manoela Chiacchia in her opener in the Blue Flight, but fell in the second round to UTA's Elizabeth Thoms in an grueling 14-12 tiebreaking deciding set.
Lindsey Hodge rebounded from an opening loss to defeat Tech's Jazmin Britos and advance to the consolation semifinals in the Blue Flight.
The Owl two entries in doubles (Ho & Durkin, Nguyen & Hodge) advanced with opening round bye and will take to the court for the first time on Saturday. 65
