FORT COLLINS, Colo. - Looking to build on last year's sixth-place finish at the event, Rice University golf heads to the Ram Masters Invitational on Sept. 15-16 at the par-70, 7,121-yard Fort Collins Country Club.
Head coach Justin Emil said, "This tournament is a quick turnaround for us. We created a little momentum in the final round at Southern Miss after bouncing back from a poor second round, and the plan is to carry that momentum over to Colorado. The golf course sets up well for us and if we stay in the moment and execute our game plan it will be a solid result. We have two freshmen in the lineup this week that are both playing well.
The Owls posted a pair of even-par rounds in the season-opening Sam Hall Intercollegiate in Hattiesburg, Miss. on Sept. 8-9, with three Owls placing in the tournaments' top 20. Sophomore Kevin Reilly paced the group in eighth place while junior James Lee and freshman Mario Carmona finished four strokes back in a tie for 20th in the field of 84 competitors.
Last September, Rice put together three solid rounds (286-287-287) at the Ram Masters Invitational to claim the first of six top-10 finishes on the season. Reilly posted his first-career top-10 finish to pace the Owls, while senior Landon Michelson claimed 15th place and Lee took home 27th.
Lee and Reilly return to this season's tournament and will be joined in the lineup by Carmona, senior Jeff Wibawa and Mitchell Meissner, who makes his collegiate debut.
In addition to Rice and host Colorado State, the 15-team field includes Abilene Christian, Air Force, 2013 champion Denver, George Washington, Kansas, McNeese State, Nevada, Northern Colorado, Sacramento State, South Dakota State, Utah Valley, Wichita State and Wyoming.
The teams will play 36 holes on Monday, beginning with a shotgun start at 9 a.m. CT. Tuesday's final round will start with tee times beginning at 9 a.m. CT with pairings determined by team scores.
