Men's Cross Country Primed For C-USA Championships

- For a second straight year, the Rice Owls men's cross country team heads to Denton this weekend to partake in the 2014 C-USA Men's Cross Country Championships at the Eagle Point Cross Country Course on the campus of the University of North Texas.

The men's 8K race will begin at 10 a.m. with the awards ceremony set for 11 a.m. Admission is free to the public.

Rice, who finished third last season behind Tulsa (champion) and North Texas, will enter Saturday's race ranked seventh in the most recent USTFCCCA South Central Regional rankings.

Aside from the Owls, three other teams enter the championship ranked in the top eight of their respective regional polls. Middle Tennessee is third in the South Region while UTEP, led by two-time All-American Anthony Rotich, is ranked eighth in the Mountain Region. Host North Texas sits one spot ahead of Rice in the South Central Region, ranked sixth.

Rounding out the men's field are Charlotte, Florida Atlantic, FIU, Louisiana Tech, Marshall, UTSA and Western Kentucky.

The Owls have finished in the top three at the C-USA Championships in eight of the last nine seasons and have will be looking for their first-ever C-USA team title. Rice will be led by redshirt junior Will Firth, who placed 10th at last year's championships. The Phoenix, Ariz. Native has been the Owls top finisher in all three races this season, including a season-best third place finish at the Rim Rock Farm Collegiate Classic in which the Owls won the team title.

Set to join Firth on Saturday will be Brad Dohner, Adam Davidson, Marco Ruiz, Meron Fessahaie, Aneesh Sampath, Steve Booker, Imran Bell and Harry Sagel.
