Katie Jensen raced to her first collegiate victory while Hannah Kay and Allie Schaich finished in the top ten to lead Rice to a second place finish at the 14th Islander Splash at West Guth Park in Corpus Christi on Friday night.

Jensen covered the 5 K course in 18:04.4, finishing nearly 18 seconds ahead of the Islanders' Cecilia Gonzalez. Kay completed the race in 18:46.5 while Schaich also cracked 19 minutes, finishing in 18:56.6.

Rice head coach Jim Bevan praised the efforts of his youthful team and was excited to see Jensen cruise to such an impressive win.

"Katie looked great tonight. She made her move after about a mile and an half and looked very strong," Bevan said. "It was exciting to see her get her first career win in such impressive fashion, and it was just as exciting to see the improvement the rest of the team showed from our meet."

Host Texas A&M Corpus Christi edged the Owls for the team title, 44-50, while Sam Houston was third with 51 points.

"Corpus Chrisit ran a very good race and were very tough on their home course. Congratulations to them, " Bevan said.

The Owls headed into the weekend without their top finisher from the Rice Invitational. Freshman Cali Roper was held out of the meet by Bevan as a precaution. "Looking down the road, it made sense to rest Cali this weekend," Bevan said. " She should be 100% for next week."

The Owls will travel to Bethlehem, Pennsylvania next weekend to compete in the 40th Annual Paul Short Run at Lehigh University.
