HOUSTON- Rice's women's cross country squad finished second, ahead of schools such as Houston and TCU, at the Rice Invitational Cross Country Meet. Cali Roper finished third to lead all Owls, and was the first of three Rice freshmen to finish in the top 15.

"I really didn't know what to expect because ome of these young ladies haven't raced in a long time, and we've got the biggest group of freshmen we've ever had," said Rice head coach Jim Bevan. "I was exceedingly proud of the job they did and very proud of the result."

Roper ran the 4220 m course in a 14:38 to finish third, and was closely followed by freshman teammate Katie Jensen at 14:53. Hannah Kay, also a freshman, ran 15:41 to finish 14th among collegians.

Allie Schaich was the highest-placed finisher among upperclassmen, as the junior finished in 15:46, good for 17th place.

Kathleen Abadie finished out the scoring for the Owls in 26th place, coming in at 16:00.
