Claire Uke Qualifies For NCAA Finals In Shot Put

May 25, 2013

Claire Uke qualified for the NCAA Finals in the shot put, becoming the first Rice athlete to do so in that event since Wendi Miller in 1989, by throwing an outdoor-best 54 feet, 1.25 inches to finish 10th among 12 qualifiers at the NCAA West Preliminary Round in Austin, Texas.

"I'm extremely proud of Claire," said Rice women's track and field head coach Jim Bevan. "She has improved tremendously in this event since coming to Rice, and qualifying for the final round is a fantastic accomplishment. She rose to the occasion tonight."

Entering the competition seeded 22nd, she threw 52 feet, 7.12 inches to qualify among the top 16 to advance to the final three throws. Entering the fifth throw ranked 13th, she threw her outdoor best to eventually finish 10th and move on to the final round.

Just a sophomore, Uke competes against 23 of the top shot put athletes in the nation on June 8th in Eugene, Ore., in the final round of competition in the NCAA Championships.
