Rice's men's track team competes in the 2013 Conference USA Indoor Championship in Birmingham, Ala. this weekend at the CrossPlex facility.

"We're hoping to get some pretty major things done at this meet, starting with our seniors," said Rice Head Coach Jon Warren. "We've got some really positive things going into this weekend and I think we can shine in those areas."

The Owls are led by senior hepathlete Clayton Chaney and sophomore vaulter Chris Pillow, both of whom have the high mark in their event in C-USA.

Chaney is the defending champion in the heptathlon, and broke his own school record in the event on Feb. 2 at the Mountain T's Invitational. His score ranks 11th in the NCAA and the best in C-USA. He has a top 15 mark in each of the six individual heptathlon events that the league keeps a list for, and is third in the league in the 60 m hurdles.

Pillow ranks 25th in the nation and leads C-US with a mark of 5.30 m in the pole vault, set at the Howie Ryan Invitational on Jan. 25. He has the best mark in C-USA this season, and looks to score highly at the C-USA meet.

The Owls look to score highly in the shot put, as senior Alex Zinchenko ranks fourth in the league entering the event, and in the distance races, led by Gabe Cuadra and James llamas, who rank second and third in the conference in the 5000 m run entering the event.

Rice hosts the outdoor version of the C-USA Championship, from May 9 to 12.
