HOUSTON- Rice fell 3-0 to No. 12 Washington on Saturday morning in both teams final game of the Tiger Classic at Rice's Fox Gym. Megan Murphy posted 40 assists and was named to the All-Tournament team.
"We took steps forward this weekend even though the record doesn't show it," said Rice Head Coach Genny Volpe. "We played a very high level of competition this morning and were in the driver's seat many times. However, we need to finish and take advantage of opportunities."
"Our offense was clicking and Megan Murphy did a great job of running the offense and putting us in a position to be successful," added Volpe.
The 12th-ranked Huskies (6-0) had just enough firepower to finish the Owls (2-5) in each set. Rice had a chance to serve and tie the score at 20 or later in each set, before Washington finished the set.
The match featured 23 tie scores and five lead changes in a set.
Murphy was named to the All-Tournament team, posting 114 assists over the course of the three-match tournament. The redshirt junior from Duncan College had 11 kills and 22 digs in the tournament.
Senior Laurie McNamara posted a season-high 14 kills to lead all players. Lizzy Bache posted 12 kills and Nancy Cole reached double-digits with 10 kills, her fifth match with double-digit kills this season.
Daniela Arenas had 13 digs, her fifth straight match with double-digit digs. Murphy, the All-Tournament selectee, had nine digs.
The Owls led 9-6 in the first set before eventually falling 25-21. McNamara had six kills in the first set, and Murphy added 14 assists.
Rice pulled out to an 18-15 lead in the second set, before the Huskies came back and took the set, again by a score of 25-21. McNamara again posted six kills in the second set, while Murphy came up with 13 assists.
Rice hit .452 in the third and final set, but it was not enough to overcome the Huskies, who took the set 25-22. Rice held on to a 19-17 lead before Washington made its final run.
The Owls are back in action Tuesday, Sept. 4 as they host the Sam Houston State Bearkats at 7 p.m. in Rice's primary venue, Tudor Fieldhouse.
