Czyz Named C-USA Soccer Defender of the Week

Aug. 27, 2012

IRVING, Tex. - Rice sophomore goalkeeper Amy Czyz has been named the Conference USA defensive player of the week for soccer the league office announced from its headquarters in Irving, Tex., on Monday (Aug. 27). Kenzie Scovill of SMU and Tess Hall of UTEP both shared the C-USA Co-Offensive Player of the Week honors.

Czyz was sound and solid to help Rice post an unbeaten 1-0-1 last weekend. On Friday, Czyz made an eye-opening career-high 11 saves to help preserve a 1-1 double-overtime tie on the road at LSU. The Danville, Calif., native also made a save in 77 minutes of work Sunday in a road game at McNeese State. She had left Sunday's contest with the Owls already holding a comfortable 2-0 lead. For the two games, Czyz made 12 total saves in 187 minutes of action and maintained a composite .923 goals-against average. This is her first defensive player of the week award of the 2012 season and second of her young career.

Scovill scored three goals, including a pair of game-winners, and added an assist as SMU defeated Oral Roberts and Arkansas last weekend. Hall also recorded three goals and one assist to help UTEP capture the Border Shootout Championship with Miner wins over Texas State and Army.

The Owls (1-1-1) have finished a tough road-swing, but the team is back home for a pair of games this weekend. Rice next hosts longtime rivals TCU on Friday (Aug. 31) and Texas State on Sunday (Sept. 2). Both games are scheduled to begin at 7 pm at the Rice Soccer Stadium.
