Rice Volleyball Team Hosts Spring Tournament

April 12, 2012

The Rice Owls volleyball team hosts its annual spring tournament this Saturday, April 14 inside Tudor Fieldhouse as well the adjacent Fox Gymnasium.

Action starts at 10 a.m. and admission is free. Teams competing with Rice include Sam Houston State, Lamar University, and STORM - a squad comprised of ex-collegiate volleyball stars.

Rice plays Sam Houston State at 10 a.m., vs. STORM at 11:30 a.m., and concludes by playing Lamar at 1:30 p.m.

"We are looking forward to hosting our final competition of the spring season," says Rice head coach Genny Volpe. "Our team has worked very hard in the weight room and in fine tuning their skills on the volleyball court. Our goals for the fall season are high, so the effort and focus has been strong this spring. The improvements we have made over the past few months are undeniable. We are hoping that our fans will come out and support the team on Saturday, and should be pleased with a preview of our 2012 volleyball team."

The Owls finished the 2011 campaign with an 18-13 record and tied for second-place in Conference USA with a 13-7 mark. For the 2012 season, Volpe returns 11 letterwinners and five starters from last season's squad. AVCA All-America Honorable Mentions Nancy Cole, a middle blocker, and setter Megan Murphy highlight the Owl returnees.
