IRVING, Tex. - Rice senior pitcher Matthew Reckling has been named a Conference USA Co-Pitcher of the Week for March 19-25 the league office announced Monday morning from its headquarters in Irving, Tex. Reckling and Southern Miss' Andrew Pierce and share the weekly C-USA pitching honor. The Golden Eagles' Blake Brown was named C-USA Baseball Hitter of the Week.
Reckling was sensational in the Owls' Conference USA league-opener last week at the University of Memphis. The Houston native fired a complete game three-hit shutout at Memphis on March 23. He allowed just one walk and struck out eight to improve to 4-0 on the season with a 1.05 ERA. He faced 30 Memphis hitters and held the Tigers to a composite .100 batting average. Rice needed the standout pitching performance to win the C-USA opener by a narrow 1-0 margin.
Andrew Pierce struck out a career-high 15 batters without a walk in just 7.0 shutout innings in a win against C-USA foe Houston. The strikeout total was the most ever by a Golden Eagle in a nine-inning game. Brown meanwhile hit safely in all four games and homered three times to finish with eight RBI and eight runs scored.
The weekly C-USA pitching honor is the second of the season for Reckling. The Owl right-hander was also named the C-USA Pitcher of the Week on Feb. 27. Reckling's Rice teammates Michael Fuda and Jordan Stephens were named the C-USA Hitter and Pitcher of the Week, respectively, on Feb. 27 and March 12.
The Owls, 18-8 overall and tied for first place in the C-USA standings with a 2-1 league record, close out the current four-game road swing at longtime rival Lamar on Tuesday (March 27). Start time with the Cardinals is set for 6:30 pm. The Owls are then back home at Reckling Park for a three-game C-USA weekend series against Southern Miss March 30 to April 1.
