Rice Volleyball Plays at SMU & Tulsa

The Rice Owls volleyball squad (7-7, 2-1) plays at SMU (4-10, 0-2) on Friday (7 p.m.) and at Tulsa on Sunday (1 p.m.). This is the start of four-straight matches on the road.

Quick Look at Rice (7-7, 2-1)
The Owls climbed to the .500-mark at 7-7 with a 3-2 win over Southern Miss on Sunday. The victory also pushed Rice's Conference USA record at 2-1.

Rice has three Owls averaging over 2.00 kills per set. Junior middle blocker Nancy Cole leads the squad 151 kills and 2.70 kills per set, junior Laurie McNamara follows at 2.43 (136 kills), while freshman Lizzy Bache averages 2.30 kills per set. Setter Megan Murphy is averaging 10.50 assists per set, while Megan White leads the Owl defense with at 4.52 digs per set.

Quick Look at SMU (4-10, 0-2)
The Mustangs are struggling with a 4-10 overall record and a 0-2 C-USA slate. Jessica Oliver leads SMU with a 2.91 kps (154 kills), while Dana Powell has 153 kills and a 2.89 kps average.

Quick Look at Tulsa (11-4, 2-0)
The Golden Hurricane has won 24-straight C-USA matches and have won 36 of their last 37 matches in league play. Tulsa has only lost three C-USA regular season matches in two-plus years. Tyler Henderson leads TU and C-USA with a 4.91 kills per set average with 275 kills. Dana Silva follows at 2.94 kps.

The Series
Rice leads the series vs. SMU 19 to 11. The Mustangs won both matches a year, 3-1 in Houston and 3-2 in Dallas.

The Owls also lead the all-time series vs. Tulsa at 20-13. TU swept both matches in 2010, 3-0 in Houston and 3-0 in Tulsa.

Rice Head Coach Genny Volpe
Rice head volleyball coach Genny Volpe is in her eighth season directing the Owls' volleyball program. Volpe has an overall school and career record of 136-93. She has led the Owls to all three of their NCAA championship appearances (2004, 2008, and 2009).

In-season Tournaments
Rice is 5-6 during in-season tournament action. Rice posted a 0-2 mark at the Rice Invitational I and went 3-0 in the Rice Invitational II. The Owls were 0-3 at Hawai'i's Verizon Volleyball Challenge and went 2-1 at the SFA Invitational.

Team C-USA Stat Ranks
Rice ranks fourth in C-USA in assists (12.45), fifth in kills (12.96), sixth in blocks (2.11), and fourth in digs (15.95).

Junior Nancy Cole now has 660 kills to lead all active Owls... Megan White now has 860 career digs to lead all active Owls.

Defensive Player of the Week
Senior Megan White was named as Conference USA's Defensive Player of the Week (Sept. 5) after averaging 5.91 digs per set. She had a career-high 35 digs in the 3-2 win over Georgia Tech.

Jillian Humphrey was named to the Rice Invitational I all-tournament team. Nancy Cole was named MVP of Rice Invitational II, while Megan White and Megan Murphy were selected to the all-tournament squad. Laurie McNamara was selected to the all-tournament at Hawai'i. White and Murphy were also named to the SFA Invitational All-Tournament Team.

Road Trip Continues
The Owls play two at Marshall on Oct. 8 and Oct. 9 in Huntington, W.Va. Both matches start at 11 a.m. (CT).
