The 33rd ranked Rice Owls ran into one of the hottest men's tennis teams in the country and fell to the 25th ranked San Diego Toreros, 6-1 at the Hogan Tennis Center on the USD campus on Wednesday.
The two teams slugged it out for the doubles point to open the match, with each team taking one match before the hosts grabbed the point with a 9-7 win at No. 2. San Diego, which jumped from 42nd to 25th in this week's national poll, then quickly raced to the clinching point with straight set wins at No. 1, 4 and 5.
Isamu Tachibana, who teamed with Christian Saravia to win at No. 3 doubles, concluded his day by picking up the Owls lone point, winning his match at No. 6.
The Owls will wrap up their spring break trip to San Diego by participating this weekend in the 122nd West Coast Doubles Championships in La Jolla, California.
