COLLEGE STATION, Tex. - Rice sophomore Chelsea Fong
finished first in two individual events and was second in another, but the No. 10 ranked Texas A&M swim claimed a 160.5--95.5 dual meet victory over the Owls Saturday afternoon in College Station, Tex.
Saturday's non-conference clash had a slight change to the format as the meet was held in long-course meters, but one thing that did not change was Fong's knack for winning the 200-freestyle. The Owls' second-year standout from Cupertino, Calif., led the 200-meter free from start to finish. She posted a winning time of 2:08.77 that was almost a full second (2:09.74) ahead of the second place finisher. Her long-course time converts to approximately a short-course yards time of 1:52.44, slightly off her season-best mark she posted at the University of Houston Invitational two weeks ago.
Fong won the 200-free in a dual meet for the fifth time this season, but she wasn't quite finished on the medal stand. She then tied for first place in the 100-freestyle with Texas A&M freshman Sammie Bosma. The duo both posted identical marks of 58.82, which convert to a SCY season-best 51.41. Fong also took second in the 50-freestyle with a 27:07, a mark she then eclipsed a short time later while swimming as the lead leg on the Owls' 4x50 free relay. Her 27.04 on the sprint relay converts to a career-best 23.55.
Rice's other notable finishes from the meet included true freshman Madison Livingston taking second in the 200-breaststroke (2:47.72) and third in the 100-BR (1:17.93). Fellow Owl freshman Erin Flanigan was second in the 400-freestyle (4:29.44) and third in the 200-butterfly (2:21.97).
The Owl swimmers are back in action on Dec. 17 after the conclusion of the University's final exams of the semester. Rice competes in a three-day meet in San Antonio at the Incarnate Word Invitational.
