The Rice Owls men's cross country squad placed second at the Johnny Morris Invitational held Friday night at the UH Intramural Fields. The Owls tallied 38 points in the their season-opening event for 2010. Lamar finished first with 35 points as it had three runners in the top five.
"It was a great start to the year," commented Rice head coach Jon Warren. "The goal was to simply test them, to see what kind of fitness they brought back from their summer training and I think it shows they did pretty well. Gabe Cuadra is continuing where he left off last spring and Alex (Weinheimer) had a great race as well."
Sophomore Gabe Cuadra led Rice's efforts by running the 4.75 meter course 15:05.85 to place fourth. Alex Weinheimer was sixth at 15:17.70. Michael Trejo was 10th (15:28.39) to round out Rice's top 10 runners.
The Owls are next in action when they host the 35th annual Justin F. Cooper Memorial Rice Invitational on Fri., Sept. 17.
