The Owls were the 2009 Conference USA champions with a 23-9 record and return All-C-USA First Team picks senior Meredith Schamun , senior Tracey Lam, and junior Ashleigh McCord. Schamun, a setter from Murrieta, Calif., was the National Setter of the Year by Collegiate Volleyball Update (, C-USA co-Setter of the Year, and MVP of the C-USA championship. She is poised to become Rice's all-time leader in career assists during the 2010 season.

Lam, a native of San Francisco, is already the school record holder for career digs (1,701) and she set a new mark for season digs record as well in 2009 with 633. So, it was no surprise to anyone in C-USA that she earned her second straight C-USA Libéro of the Year Award for 2009.

An outside hitter from Wylie, Texas, McCord is one of C-USA's most ferocious and feared hitters. She led Rice with 408 kills and her 3.92 kills per set ranked third in C-USA.

Also returning for Rice are junior Megan White, who is one of the squad's top defenders and servers, senior lefty Justyna Brewczyk who plans to see time on the right side, and senior middle blocker Caroline Gill. Also returning is sophomore middle blocker Nancy Cole, who was a member of the C-USA All-Freshman team for 2009 and redshirt freshman setter Megan Murphy.

There are six newcomers to the Rice volleyball program including two experienced transfers from Big East schools. Junior outside hitter Jordan Meredith comes to Rice from Boston College and sophomore Laurie McNamara arrives from Villanova. Meredith is a native of Honolulu, Hawai'i, while McNamara is from Coppell, Texas.

The four-member freshman class (all outside hitters) includes Megan Shepard (Dripping Springs, Texas), Maria Riddlesprigger from Fresno, Calif., Tyler Jenkins from Deer Park, Texas, and Houston native Lindsay Daniels.
