IRVING - A unanimous selection, Rice University senior Michael Buttacavoli headlines the 2010 Conference USA Men's Golf All-Academic Team which was announced by the league office Wednesday.
The all-academic team consists of student-athletes who have earned a 3.2 cumulative grade point average or better and are a regular participant on their team. The team is selected by a vote of the league's Sports Information Directors for Men's Golf.
Buttacavoli is an economics major at Rice and is also pursuing a minor in business. The Miami Beach, Fla., native carries a 3.96 GPA. He is a four-time recipient of Conference USA's Commissioner's Medal and as a junior was named a Cleveland Golf/Srixon All-America Scholar by the Golf Coaches Association of America. He was selected to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District VI Men's At Large Team as a sophomore.
This is the second time in his career Buttacavoli has been named to the Conference USA All-Academic Team. He was also selected as a sophomore. A knee injury sidelined him for the spring semester of his junior season and he did not meet the league's participation requirements to be eligible for the honor last year.
Buttacavoli has returned from rehabilitating his knee to lead the Owls in Top 10 finishes with seven while posting a 73.60 strokes per round average this season.
Buttacavoli began his senior year with a second-place finish at the UTA/Waterchase Invitational to spark the Owls to their first team tournament title since 1998. He also tied for sixth at the Rice Intercollegiate as the owls won their second tournament of the year. Earlier this spring he also tied for third at the weather-shortened J.L. Lewis Intercollegiate as Rice posted a second-place finish.
Joining Buttacavoli on the 2010 C-USA All-Academic Team were Paul Apyan (Southern Miss), Rob Laird (Tulsa), Matt Schovee (SMU) and David Watkins (East Carolina).
Up next for Buttacavoli and the Owls is the Conference USA Golf Championship which gets underway Sunday at the Red Tail Golf Club in Sorrento, Fla.
